The Brussels bureaucracy is only interested in its own power ambitions

2023. 12. 13.

The European Parliament plenary session adopted its report on the 2024 European elections. The proposals of the document are an attempt by the Brussels bureaucracy to consolidate its own power, rather than respond to the will of European citizens and the problems that affect them.

Europe is in crisis, and next year’s European Parliament elections will be a test of who can provide the right answers to the increasingly pressing problems facing citizens. The consequences of misguided sanctions policy and inflation wars are now hitting Europe as a whole, as are the effects of an internal identity crisis and failed gender and green policies. Today’s report does not address these pressing issues, but sets out a scenario for consolidating the power of the Brussels bureaucracy. With this document, the European Parliament is trying to impose ideologically defined proposals on the Member States that are contrary to the Treaties.

László Trócsányi, Fidesz MEP, said: “The Spitzenkandidaten system violates the Treaties. For years, the European Commission has increasingly acted as a political body, interfering in the politics of Member States. This trend would only be exacerbated if the candidates for the post of European Commission President had to compete in a political campaign”.

As the MEP said, the report’s supporters present the Spitzenkandidaten system as a remedy for the low turnout in the European Parliament, whereas it would be helped not by institutional reforms in the interests of party politics, but by responding to the real problems of European citizens and avoiding debates of a political nature on the rule of law.
